Fielding - The under-arm throw Drills

Fielding - The under-arm throw

The purpose of this drill is to correct the technique of pick-up and releasing the ball.

Drill 1:
  • A ball is placed on top of the cone or at a stationary point
  • A fielder is placed near the ball
  • The fielder has to place his foot on the side of the ball and picks it up with his throwing arm
  • After picking the ball he places his foot in front to balance himself and releases the ball to hit the target
  • The target could be a stump or anything that you could innovate
Drill 2:

  • A ball is placed on top of the cone or at a stationary point
  • A fielder is asked to crouch to the line of the ball where it is placed from a reasonable distance
  • The fielder has to place his foot on the side of the ball and picks it up with his throwing arm
  • After picking the ball he places his foot in front to balance himself and releases the ball to hit the target
  • The target could be a stump or anything that you could innovate

 Drill 3:

  • A ball is rolled over to the fielder by the coach
  • A fielder is asked to crouch to the line of the ball as quickly as possible
  • The fielder has to place his foot on the side of the ball and picks it up with his throwing arm
  • After picking the ball he places his foot in front to balance himself and releases the ball to hit the target

You could use a wall to throw the ball and receive it. This could also be used as your target to aim at. This process will be more challenging as throwing and receiving happens at the same time.
